OLD IS GOLD SLUM YOUTH (OGSY) was incepted in 2002 as self – help youth sports and community development project in the slum of Mathare and its surrounding area, which is one of the largest and poorest slums in Africa, with several hundred thousands inhabitants living below the poverty line, surrounded by disease and crime, with very little infrastructure.
The main aim of OLD IS GOLD SLUM YOUTH (OGSY) is to use sports as a tool for change in a community that is poverty stricken, environmentally unhealthy and crime infested and to also improve living conditions of the slum dwellers, in particular the young mothers of the slum with an aim of sending the young mother back to school.
After 5 years of existence, OGSY is now proud to be among the best self help sports and community development project within Nairobi for young mothers and children. Apart from sport, the youth mothers also runs other programs namely; Batiks making, HIV/Aids, clean up Group, leadership project where youths come together and work on leadership skills dram, music poetry among others. In 2003, OGSY started a slum HIV/ Aids awareness and environmental clean ups, adopted their constitution and registered legally as a non-governmental, non-political and non profit organization, non religion, under the Societies Act of Kenya. It was founded by James Waithaka Mwatha, while working as a driver in one of the community based organization in Mathare. He is still the Chairman of the OGSY Group. |
